The same oils that fight rot also repel termites, carpenter ants, and other wood-boring insects.

Western Red Cedar is naturally rot-resistant, insect-resistant, and dimensionally stable — it doesn't warp or twist as quickly as pressure-treated pine. It also weathers to a beautiful silver-gray patina if left untreated.
Cedar doesn't *need* sealing — it'll last 15+ years untreated and weather to silver-gray. Sealing preserves the original red-brown color and extends life by 5–10 years. The choice is aesthetic, not structural.
Cedar fence installation typically runs $5,500 to $16,000 depending on length, height, and style. Yes, that's higher than pressure-treated pine, but the lifespan and aesthetics often justify the upfront premium.
Untreated cedar in this climate lasts 15–25 years. Sealed cedar can push past 30 years. Pressure-treated pine, for comparison, lasts 10–15 years before posts begin to fail.
We use Western Red Cedar (from the Pacific Northwest). It has the best rot resistance and finest grain. Eastern White Cedar is cheaper but doesn't last as long in our PA humidity.
